Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials have reportedly issued a detainer for a man accused of killing a 17-year-old Muslim girl in Virginia.
According to Breaking911, police believe Nabra Hassanen was walking to a mosque with her friends when they got into an argument with a man in a passing car.
“It appears the suspect, Darwin A. Martinez Torres, 22, of Sterling, got out of his car and assaulted the victim,” the outlet states.
Subsequently, Breaking911 states, Hassanen’s friends lost track of her.
She remained missing until after police apprehended Torres, at which point they reportedly discovered her remains in a pond along with a baseball bat.
“This tragic case appears to be the result of a road rage incident involving the suspect, who was driving and who is now charged with murder, and a group of teenagers who was walking and riding bikes in and along a roadway,” Breaking911 quotes police as saying in a statement.
“Our investigation at this point does not indicate the victim was targeted because of her race or religion. Should new information be revealed to suggest it was, we would pursue it.”
According to The Guardian, Hassanen’s father disputes this, stating he has no doubt his daughter was targeted for her religion.
“I don’t believe this story,” Mohmoud Hassanen said in reference to the road rage narrative police have suggested. “I tell the detective the same thing. He killed my daughter because she is Muslim. That’s what I believe. That’s what I told him.”
“Why did he run behind this girl especially? For what? When I go to court I’m going to look him in the eye: why did you do this to my daughter? Then I’m going to forgive him and leave him to God’s face. The lord is going to judge him. He took my daughter’s life.”
He reportedly added that he believes his daughter fell down, at which point the suspect beat her with a baseball bat, picked up her body and dumped it in the lake, which was reportedly a mile from the mosque.
Mohmoud reportedly refused, however, to blame President Donald Trump for his daughter’s death.
The Daily Caller, citing an ICE spokesperson, states that Torres hails from Salvador.
The outlet cites the spokesperson, Carissa Cutrell, as stating, “on June 19, ICE lodged a detainer on Darwin Martinez Torres, a citizen and national of El Salvador, with the Adult Detention Center in Fairfax, Virginia. ICE lodges detainers on aliens who have been arrested on local criminal charges when the agency has probable cause to believe an alien is removable from the United States. Mr. Martinez Torres has no prior encounters with ICE.”
The Washington Post previously reported that Torres works in construction and has a four-year-old son and girlfriend.
